Visual Principles in Designing Digital Teaching Content
2. Why are visual principles important?
Humans receive most of the information from their environment visually. When learning materials are clear, aesthetically appealing, and well structured:
-
information is understood more quickly;
-
cognitive load on students is reduced (Sweller et al., 2011);
-
engagement and motivation increase;
-
content is easier to remember and retained longer.
Visual clutter, poorly matched colors, or an unorganised layout can cause confusion, reduce motivation to engage with the material, or diminish its educational value.
