Methods and Tools of Assessment in a Digital Environment
1. Introduction
In digitally mediated education, assessing students’ knowledge and skills requires a different, more flexible approach compared to traditional classroom-based education without the use of digital tools. In addition to understanding the basic types of assessment – diagnostic, formative, and summative – it is essential to understand the methods and tools through which these types of assessment can be implemented in a digital context, as well as contemporary learning theories that ensure sound pedagogical foundations for digital assessment.
Let’s recap:
Assessment is a systematic process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting information about students’ learning and achievements for the purposes of monitoring progress, providing feedback, improving the learning and teaching process, and making educational decisions. Grading is the assignment of a numerical, letter, or descriptive grade that summarises the level of achievement of learning outcomes. It is based on data collected through assessment, most often summatively, and serves administrative purposes such as deciding on course completion, ranking students, and issuing certificates or diplomas.
Grading is a narrower concept within assessment and the result of the assessment process in the form of a grade.
