1. Visual principles in the creation of digital teaching content

In contemporary digital education, high-quality text alone is no longer sufficient. The visual component plays a key role in attracting attention, maintaining student engagement, and supporting the comprehension and retention of information (Mayer, 2021). For this reason, when creating digital teaching content, it is essential to apply fundamental visual rules and design principles.

2. Why are visual principles important?

Humans receive most of the information from their environment visually. When learning materials are clear, aesthetically appealing, and well structured:

  • information is understood more quickly;

  • cognitive load on students is reduced (Sweller et al., 2011);

  • engagement and motivation increase;

  • content is easier to remember and retained longer.

Visual clutter, poorly matched colors, or an unorganised layout can cause confusion, reduce motivation to engage with the material, or diminish its educational value.

3. Basic Visual Design Principles

1. Simplicity
Less is more. Do not overload pages with unnecessary elements, animations, or decorations that do not support understanding. Every element should have a clear purpose. Leave enough white space so that the content is easy to read and visually clear (Clark & Mayer, 2016).

2. Hierarchy
Use visual elements such as font size, colour, line weight, or emphasis to show what is important and what is secondary. Titles, subtitles, and body text should be visually distinct to help students follow the structure of the content.

3. Contrast
Contrast helps highlight essential information. The text should stand out from the background (e.g., black text on a white background) to ensure readability. Avoid low-contrast combinations, such as light grey text on a white background (W3C, 2024).

4. Consistency
Use the same colours, typography, icons, and styles throughout the material. A consistent design allows students to focus on the content instead of adapting to different visual styles (Clark & Mayer, 2016).

5. Typography
Choose simple, readable fonts. It is recommended to use no more than two fonts in one material—one for headings and one for body text. Avoid overly stylised or decorative fonts that make reading difficult.

6. Colour
Colours can attract attention, convey emotions, and help organise information. Use them carefully:

  • choose a limited palette (2–4 colours)—use tools such as Coolors, Adobe Color, or Canva Color Palette Generator to find harmonious combinations

  • ensure sufficient contrast for readability—verify it with tools like WebAIM Contrast Checker

  • avoid overly saturated or distracting combinations

7. Images and Graphics
Images should be high-quality, relevant, and connected to the topic. Avoid generic illustrations that add no value. Well-chosen images can break text monotony, increase engagement, and support memory, but they must always serve the instructional purpose.

For graphs and tables:

  • simplify the visual presentation,

  • use clear labels and legends,

  • avoid data overload (Mayer, 2021).

4. Tools for Visual Design of Teaching Content

When developing digital teaching content, you can use a variety of tools that enhance visual design:

  • Canva – for designing presentations, infographics, and visually appealing materials

  • Genially – for creating interactive content and visually engaging presentations

  • Piktochart – for developing infographics and visual reports

  • PowerPointKeynote – for creating presentations

  • Miro / MindMeister – for producing visual maps, diagrams, and collaborative boards.

Many of these tools include templates that already apply fundamental visual design principles. However, it is recommended to use these templates only as a starting point and adapt them to the specific topic and target audience.

5. Conclusion

Visual design principles are not merely an aesthetic addition to teaching materials—they are an essential component of pedagogical design. A thoughtful selection of colours, typography, layout, and other visual elements significantly enhances the clarity, accessibility, and appeal of digital learning content. Research shows that clear, consistent, and user-oriented design reduces cognitive load, increases motivation, and supports the acquisition and retention of knowledge (Sweller et al., 2011; Mayer, 2021).

Particular attention should be given to accessibility, ensuring that resources are usable for all students, including those with disabilities (W3C, 2024). Emerging trends in instructional and digital design additionally emphasize User Experience (UX) principles, which help ensure that digital learning materials are not only visually engaging, but also intuitive and easy to navigate (Norman, 2023).

In this way, high-quality visual design becomes a powerful tool for enhancing learning effectiveness, improving student engagement, and fostering a sense of inclusion and participation (Sweller et al., 2011; Mayer, 2021).

6. Examples of good and poor visual design solutions

Good visual solution:

  • clear page structure with headings

  • high contrast between text and background

  • visual elements directly related to the topic

  • consistent typography and colour palette

Poor visual solution:

  • too many different colours and fonts

  • dense text without paragraphs or white space

  • low-resolution images or visuals not clearly related to the content

  • text placed on a low-contrast background
