1. User interface evaluation

What are the user interface and user experience?

In digital education, having high-quality content is not enough. What also matters is how that content looks and how users experience it. In this context, we refer to the following concepts: User Interface (UI) and User Experience (UX).

User Interface (UI) refers to the visual appearance and layout of elements that users interact with—for example: buttons, icons, menus, colours, images, the arrangement of text or videos.

User Experience (UX) goes beyond appearance—it describes how a user feels while using digital content. It includes ease of use, clarity of information, sense of control, emotional impression, and even motivation for further learning.

Put simply: UI is what we see, UX is what we experience.

Key elements of UI/UX evaluation

Based on everything covered so far, UI/UX evaluation should consider the following elements:

Structure and organisation

  • Is the content clearly structured into units, lessons, and activities?

  • Can students easily follow the learning flow and find the information they need?

Visual design

  • Are colours, fonts, and layouts pleasant and consistent?

  • Does the visual design support the understanding of content without visual clutter?

Navigation and usability

  • Is it intuitive and easy to move through the content?

  • Can students use system features and tools without difficulties?

Accessibility and inclusiveness

  • Can all students use the content, including those with disabilities?

  • Does the material include captions, alt text, proper contrast, and clear structure?

Clarity of communication

  • Are texts, instructions, and educational messages clear, simple, and adapted to the target audience?

  • Does the student understand what is expected of them?

Interactivity and engagement

  • Does the material include interactive elements that encourage participation and critical thinking?

  • Does the tool provide feedback opportunities for students?

Technical performance

  • Does the content load quickly and correctly on different devices?

  • Does everything function technically, without errors or problems?

2. UI/UX evaluation methods

Evaluation helps teachers improve their digital materials so that they become more effective and pleasant to use. Some of the most common evaluation methods are (European Commission, 2020):

  • heuristic evaluation: An expert reviews the digital material according to established principles (e.g., Nielsen’s heuristics, Nielsen, 1995).

  • usability testing: Students interact with the material while the teacher observes how they navigate and solve tasks.

  • surveys or questionnaires: Students provide feedback on clarity and ease of use.

  • user flow analysis: Tracks how students move through the content (e.g., a lesson in an LMS).

  • usage metrics tracking: Digital platforms often allow the collection of data on which materials are most viewed or where users drop out, helping identify problematic areas (European Commission, 2020).

3. The role of feedback in improving quality

UI and UX evaluation is not a one-time activity — it should be carried out continuously. Student feedback is valuable because it reveals where weaknesses in digital content may be. Hattie and Timperley (2007) emphasize that high-quality feedback significantly contributes to learning effectiveness. The EU Digital Education Action Plan highlights the importance of collecting data and user feedback to understand users’ needs and enhance the quality of digital education (European Commission, 2020).

Some questions you can ask yourself when evaluating your own digital content include:

  • Is the content clearly structured?

  • Is the navigation intuitive?

  • Are colours and contrasts pleasant and readable?

  • Can a person with special needs use the content without barriers?

  • Does the student feel motivated after working with the digital content?

 

4. Conclusion

UX and UI are not just “design.” Well-designed digital materials make learning easier, more engaging, and more accessible for everyone. Every element you have encountered in this course—visual design, educational messaging, adaptation to different users, integration of digital tools—is part of the user experience. Therefore, evaluating the user interface and user experience is a key step in creating high-quality digital education (European Commission, 2020).
