1. Introduction

In digitally mediated education, assessing students’ knowledge and skills requires a different, more flexible approach compared to traditional classroom-based education without the use of digital tools. In addition to understanding the basic types of assessment diagnostic, formative, and summative it is essential to understand the methods and tools through which these types of assessment can be implemented in a digital context, as well as contemporary learning theories that ensure sound pedagogical foundations for digital assessment.

Let’s recap:

Assessment is a systematic process of collecting, analysing, and interpreting information about students’ learning and achievements for the purposes of monitoring progress, providing feedback, improving the learning and teaching process, and making educational decisions. Grading is the assignment of a numerical, letter, or descriptive grade that summarises the level of achievement of learning outcomes. It is based on data collected through assessment, most often summatively, and serves administrative purposes such as deciding on course completion, ranking students, and issuing certificates or diplomas.

Grading is a narrower concept within assessment and the result of the assessment process in the form of a grade.

2. Digital Assessment Methods – Overview

Various Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Moodle, offer a wide range of tools for implementing all types of assessment. Their advantages include automatic processing of results with basic learning analytics, transparency, and the ability to track student progress over time. Table 1 provides an overview of the types of assessment and the corresponding digital tools available in Moodle, or that can be integrated into Moodle activities.

3. Quizes and Games – Interactive Assessment

Quizzes are one of the most commonly used digital tools for assessment. In a formative context, they are primarily used for self-check, while in a summative context, they form part of formal assessment and grading. Moodle allows detailed configuration of quizzes, including the number of attempts, time limits, question types, and automated feedback provided to students.

Gamified tools such as Kahoot and Quizlet make assessment dynamic and motivating. Although they are not typically used for formal grading, they effectively promote engagement and provide quick insight into students’ understanding, making them suitable for formative assessment. For additional flexibility and an improved user experience, some external tools can be integrated into Moodle via the LTI protocol, allowing students to access them directly within the LMS.

Recommendation:

For courses with a large number of students, combining quizzes with automated assessment and feedback saves teachers time and enables continuous monitoring of student progress (Divjak et al., 2022).

4. E-portfolio, Reflection and Digital Notes – Development of Metacognition and Self-regulated Learning

Metacognition, or students’ ability to think about their own thinking, is closely linked to self-regulated learning, which includes planning, monitoring, and directing one’s own learning process (Zimmerman, 2002). In a digital learning environment, teachers can actively foster metacognition and self-regulation by using tools that support reflection, progress tracking, and goal setting. Activities such as Journals, individual Wikis, blogs, and self-assessment tools (e.g., Choice or Feedback) give students space to reflect on their acquired knowledge, achievements, and challenges. Through regular use of such tools, students develop skills of self-assessment and accountability for their own learning, which strengthens their independence and contributes to their long-term ability to learn effectively an essential element of modern, competency-based higher education.

E-portfolios allow students to document their learning process, progress, and final outcomes in a structured format. They may include various digital formats text, images, infographics, videos, and links to external resources. In Moodle, portfolios can be implemented using the Database resource or the Assignment activity with clear guidelines on the expected content. At the institutional level, a dedicated system for creating, storing, and assessing e-portfolios may also be organized (Balaban et al., 2013).

Reflective practices support the development of metacognition, i.e., students’ ability to think about their own learning, which is a prerequisite for effective self-regulated learning. Activities such as Wikis, blogs, journals, or feedback tools enable students to regularly record their thoughts, questions, and insights.

The Journal in Moodle is an individual digital notebook where students regularly write personal entries, reflecting on their learning, progress, and difficulties. Teachers can review these entries, comment on them, and if required assess them. The Journal activity is a valuable tool for both formative and self-assessment and for developing reflective thinking and metacognition. Although in some Moodle versions it is an optional (non-core) module, its pedagogical value is very high.

The comparison of selected tools for fostering metacognition and self-regulated learning is presented in Table 2.

Recommendation:

Weekly or thematic prompts can be added to the Journal (Moon, 2006). Example prompts include: What was the most challenging part of this lesson, and why? How would you apply this knowledge in real life? Evaluate your engagement in the group task what would you do differently next time? Students may also use the Journal to record their observations about required readings or MOOCs (Bralić & Divjak, 2018).

5. Infographics and Online Presentations – Synthesizing Knowledge

Visual representations of knowledge, such as infographics, allow students to synthesize information and communicate key messages in a concise and creative format. Recommended tools: Canva, Piktochart, Genially, and Venngage.

Online presentations, whether recorded (videos) or delivered live, are particularly useful for developing communication skills and the ability to present arguments within a defined time, structure, and with a specific audience in mind. Teachers can assess these using rubrics and combine them with discussion forums.

Recommendation:

When assessing creative tasks, it is essential to use clear criteria and rubrics so that students understand how their work will be evaluated before they begin creating it. Rubrics also support transparency and clarity of grading after the assessment process.

6. Peer and Self-Assessment

The digital environment enables high-quality implementation of peer assessment, in which students provide structured feedback to one another. In Moodle, this can be carried out using the Workshop activity, where both the submitted work and the quality of the peer assessments are evaluated.

Self-assessment is used to develop reflection, responsibility, and the ability to recognise one’s own strengths and weaknesses. Effective methods include the Choice activity, the Feedback activity, individual Wikis, personal blogs connected to Moodle, and the Workshop activity. Self-assessment also develops metacognition and supports self-regulated learning.

Peer assessment and self-assessment are common forms of formative assessment that provide meaningful feedback to students (Nicol & Macfarlane-Dick, 2006). More materials on this topic will be provided later in the e-course (under the unit Rubrics for Assessment in Digital Learning Environments).

7. Key Role of Rubrics in Digital Assessment

Rubrics typically consist of criteria, performance levels, and descriptive indicators. They are structured tools that define assessment criteria based on the intended learning outcomes and levels of achievement for a given task. In addition to ensuring transparency and fairness, rubrics provide high-quality feedback that helps students improve their learning. In Moodle, rubrics can be integrated into the Assignment and Workshop activities through the built-in Rubric editor.

Rubrics are used for assessing essays, presentations, infographics, problem-solving tasks, projects, as well as for self-assessment and peer assessment, and for providing personalized feedback.

Rubrics guide students toward clear goals and learning outcomes, giving them a better understanding of expectations and their own performance (Andrade, 2005). Research also confirms that their use supports the improvement of student learning (Panadero & Jonsson, 2013). More materials on this topic will be provided later in the course.

8. Conclusion: Thoughtful, Diverse, and Inclusive Assessment

Digital tools offer a wide range of assessment possibilities, but their pedagogical grounding is essential for meaningful application. Using multiple assessment methods ensures a diversity of approaches that support individualised assessment, allow each student to demonstrate knowledge in a way that suits them best, and increase the credibility of results and student engagement.

This highlights the need to develop teachers’ digital competencies, including the ability to plan, implement, and analyse digital assessment, as emphasized in the DigCompEdu framework (Redecker & Punie, 2017). Within this framework, the competence area “Assessment Practices” specifically stresses the importance of using digital tools for diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment, as well as for providing personalized feedback and tracking student progress.

Quality assessment is not merely measurement it is part of the learning process. With carefully chosen methods and clear criteria, digital assessment becomes a tool for empowering students and enhancing educational practice.

Recommendation:

Consider which assessment methods you currently use in your teaching. Which of the presented tools and approaches could you integrate to further empower students, increase inclusiveness, and gain a more credible insight into their progress?
