The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb, has created an online digital tool called the ECTS calculator, which can help you determine the time that students will spend on a particular activity.

The tool allows you to get an estimate of the total workload based on the planned forms of work and check whether the assigned number of ECTS points corresponds to the actual scope of work.

First, collect data on all planned activities: lectures, seminars and exercises, independent study, work on assignments and projects, preparation for knowledge tests, fieldwork and consultations. For each activity, enter the frequency, duration and number of weeks and, where applicable, the estimated time outside of class. The calculator will add up the hours and display the estimated number of ECTS points.

Compare the resulting calculation with the currently assigned ECTS points in your syllabus for that course. If you notice major discrepancies, consider adjustments: reducing the number of assignments or combining them, changing the method of knowledge testing, better scheduling deadlines during the semester or correcting the workload of individual activities.
