Video 5. Personal Digital Academic Profile – Researcher Visibility
In the digital age, having a online presence is essential for scientists. When someone searches for you, whether a student, colleague, or reviewer, the first three links they find will form an initial impression. In this video, we will show you how to craft a professional, authentic, and up-to-date digital identity as a scientist. Not all platforms are equally effective. CroRIS serves as your profile in the Croatian Science Information System, while your ORCID iD functions as your permanent scientific identifier. Google Scholar provides an overview of your citations and and ResearchGate enables you to share papers and build networks. LinkedIn, as a social platform, bridges the gap between your scientific and professional digital identities. It is important to remember that apart from CroRIS, these are commercial platforms with their own advantages and limitations. Regardless of your choice, it is crucial to keep your profile updated and consistent. Digital coherence enhances recognition and linking profiles, simplifies access to information while boosting visibility. If someone wishes to contact you, they can do so immediately. If they want to collaborate on a project, they can easily discern your research interests. A personal scientific page is more than just a list of your publications. It is a space to tell your professional journey. You can include summaries in various languages, showcase key projects, and link to your blog or interviews aimed at popularizing the science. A well-designed page reflects your identity as an academic. Many institutions provide staff with the option to create personal webpages. Educators can also establish their own pages. The most common challenges faced by educators and scientists are not technical, but organizational. Many create profiles on various platforms and later neglect or stop updating them. It is also worth considering the option of linking profiles, which allows simultaneous updates across platforms. Digital visibility is not a one-time task. It should be a part of your routine. Therefore, a schedule should be set to check monthly if everything is current. Periodically search for your name to see what others see. Is there any information outdated or inaccurate? Is there a non-authorized profile? Remove what is unnecessary and update what matter. A digital reputation is like a workspace. It must be kept tidy. Remember, your presence is not just about visibility. It is also about transparency. Being online does not mean being self-promotional. It means being accessible and relevant. Your scholarly work has value and one way to extend its impact is through your digital footprint. Remember, this is not about self-promotion, it is about academic responsibility.
