This e-course is designed for the professional development of teachers in higher education. It focuses on learning analytics, which involves the collection and analysis of data about pupils/students and their learning environments, as well as reporting the results for the purpose of understanding and improving learning and teaching processes and the associated learning environments. The topics of the e-course include: the definition, characteristics, and purpose of applying learning analytics; types of data and data sources; data collection, analysis, and reporting of data analysis results; methods of interpreting and using analysed data; ethical aspects and personal data protection; and the application of learning analytics with the aim of improving learning and teaching (pedagogical interventions). The e-course is designed in accordance with innovative learning and teaching strategies. Problem-based learning, the flipped classroom, and inquiry-based learning are applied. Each topic also includes one video lesson. All activities take place online with the support of an instructor who acts as a facilitator.

  • explain the importance of learning analytics for improving learning and teaching processes
  • analyse ethical aspects, personal data protection aspects, and limitations in the use of learning analytics
  • apply digital technologies for the purpose of collecting, analysing, and using data on student activities, performance, and progress
  • critically evaluate the sources, types, and quality of available data in order to gain more information about students’ learning and teaching processes
  • evaluate and adapt learning design, teaching strategies, and assessment methods based on the results obtained through the application of learning analytics
  • apply learning analytics with the aim of improving learning and teaching, and implementing pedagogical interventions

In this module, we will discuss how to collect, critically appraise, analyse learning data, and interpret th e results. Topics include core concepts in learning analytics, data sources and types, validity and ethics, analysis and reporting, interpretation, and interventio ns rooted in learning - analytics.
