Welcome. In this video lesson, we will discuss different types of assessment and their application in contemporary education. When it comes to assessment, instructors can choose from a wide range of activities and methods, making it essential to select the assessment approach that best aligns with their teaching objectives and desired learning outcomes. Below is an overview of the three key types of assessment: diagnostic, formative, and summative. Diagnostic assessment typically involves administering short tests at the beginning and/or end of a course. It provides instructors with insight into students’ prior knowledge and understanding of a given topic. This information is particularly useful when planning initial teaching activities and adjusting content and teaching approaches throughout the course. Diagnostic assessment is generally not included in the final grade but may serve as a metacognitive tool that helps students reflect on their own level of knowledge and understanding. Formative assessment, or assessment for learning, involves the continuous collection of information about students’ progress and the challenges they encounter during the course. It usually relies on low-stakes tasks such as short quizzes, reflective writing assignments, or various forms of collaborative work. Based on the collected data, instructors provide targeted feedback, encourage student improvement, motivate learners, and, if needed, adapt their teaching strategies to enhance learning outcomes. Summative assessment, or assessment of learning, is usually conducted at the end of the learning and teaching process. Its primary purpose is to measure how much a student has learned during a course or module. The benefits of summative assessment include providing students with a final grade - often an institutional requirement - as well as offering a clear goal for students to work towards, which can enhance motivation. Additionally, summative assessment results help instructors identify weaker areas in learning, allowing them to direct future teaching activities toward topics that require further attention. All types of assessment can be supported by digital technologies, such as online quizzes, rubrics, portfolios, project assignments, and other features and functionalities offered by Learning Management Systems (LMS). Moodle integrates numerous tools and activities designed for monitoring and assessing student achievement. These include: Forum, game-based tools such as Question Book, Crossword, and Millionaire, as well as H5P, Journal, Mindmap, Survey, Workshop, Assignment, Quiz and Questionnaire. In conclusion, digital tools enable automation, progress tracking, and the personalisation of learning. The instructor’s role remains essential in designing the assessment strategy and ensuring fairness, transparency, and the achievement of learning outcomes.
