In this video lesson, we will discuss contemporary assessment methods in digital education, with a particular focus on the use of diverse assessment approaches and the importance of rubrics as tools for fair and transparent grading. As discussed in the previous lesson, three fundamental types of assessment are commonly used to evaluate students’ knowledge and skills: diagnostic, formative, and summative assessment. In addition to these core types, the following lessons will explore self-assessment and peer assessment, both of which play a key role in modern educational practice. Learning Management Systems (LMS), such as Moodle, enable the creation of quizzes, forums, databases, and workshops, thus supporting both teaching and assessment. In addition to Moodle’s built-in tools, many instructors also rely on external tools compatible with the LMS to provide students with a broader range of assessment methods. Moodle offers a diverse set of resources that can assist instructors in designing and implementing all types of student assessment . For summative assessment, which focuses on measuring achievement at the end of a unit and in which grades or points are central, the following resources are most commonly used: • Assignment, typically completed individually, but group submissions are also possible • Quiz, time-restricted and with delayed feedback, ideally conducted in a secure environment such as via Safe Exam Browser or in a proctored exam setting. For formative assessment, which involves continuous monitoring of student progress throughout a course, semester, or academic year, the following tools are commonly used: • Forum with grading, used to evaluate the quality of students’ posts. Grading may be restricted to the instructor or extended to allow peer assessment. Forum discussions encourage students to exchange opinions on specific topics - often based on prior readings or lessons - thus developing critical thinking and providing instructors with deeper insight into student understanding • Quiz, without time limits or grading, with accessible hints and an unlimited number of attempts • H5P interactive content, embedded without linking to the Gradebook, used for quick knowledge checks • Game-based activities, which make learning engaging and dynamic. Students respond to questions within a time limit and earn points for correct answers. Tools such as Kahoot and Quizlet are often used for this purpose, helping develop skills such as concentration, teamwork, and problem-solving, while also assessing actual knowledge • Online surveys and questionnaires, which are particularly useful when instructors wish to gather student feedback on their learning experience. They can measure satisfaction with the course or provide insight into decisions students make during learning. Quick polls allow students to express their views in a simple and engaging way, thereby promoting active participation. Peer assessment involves students evaluating each other’s work. It helps them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses and develop critical thinking skills. Methods for implementing peer assessment include: • Ratings, applied to forum posts or entries in a glossary or database by adjusting permissions in the student role • Workshop, a structured peer-assessment activity managed by the instructor but enabling active student engagement. Self-assessment, where students reflect on their own progress and achievements, can be implemented through tools such as: • Choice or Feedback, used for short or extended reflections on current understanding • Wiki, in individual mode, where students can freely document their reflections as open-text entries • Blog, linked to the user profile rather than the course, enabling students to record reflections as drafts or public posts. In conclusion, well-designed online assessment not only measures knowledge but also encourages students to think critically, learn through play, and develop skills that are essential in real-life contexts. Some students achieve better results with certain types or methods of assessment. If a specific method poses a barrier, their results may not accurately reflect their actual level of knowledge and skills acquired. A key factor in ensuring fair assessment is the use of criterion-referenced rubrics. Rubrics clearly define expectations and enable transparent and consistent evaluation of student work. They represent an advanced assessment method based on explicit criteria. A rubric consists of a set of criteria organized across performance levels. Each level is assigned a numerical value, and the instructor selects the level that best reflects the quality of the student’s work for each criterion. The raw rubric score is calculated as the sum of the selected level scores. The final grade is then determined by comparing the actual score to the minimum and maximum possible scores. Rubrics also facilitate structured feedback, helping students understand their strengths and areas for improvement. They can be used both for self-assessment and peer assessment. Moodle enables the use of rubrics through the Rubric Editor, which will be discussed later in this lesson. To conclude, a diverse set of digital assessment methods and tools provides flexibility but also requires thoughtful design. Rubrics are among the most valuable tools for building credible and inclusive assessment practices.
