Welcome! In the digital age, an increasing number of higher education instructors use automated assessment and feedback systems to improve efficiency, ensure consistent grading, and provide students with timely and targeted support. Automation not only saves time but can also increase objectivity and offer students continuous insight into their own progress. This video lesson provides an overview of the key functionalities offered by Moodle, the most widely used Learning Management System (LMS), as well as external tools that further enhance assessment possibilities in digital learning environments. Moodle offers numerous options for automated assessment. In automatically graded quizzes, a wide range of question types can be used, from multiple-choice and true/false formats to short-answer and matching questions. Once a student completes a quiz, the system automatically calculates the score, and if configured, displays immediate feedback for each individual question. This feedback may be general, differentiated for correct and incorrect answers, or interactive in adaptive mode, allowing students to identify and correct mistakes in real time. One of Moodle’s more advanced activities is the Lesson, which enables the creation of nonlinear learning pathways. Questions and content can branch depending on students’ responses, creating a sense of personalized and adaptive learning (MoodleDocs, Lesson activity). In addition, the Gradebook within Moodle supports automatic grade calculations, the application of rules and weightings, and the inclusion of comments that can be generated based on predefined criteria. This functionality makes it possible to provide students with more detailed information about how they achieved specific results. Furthermore, Moodle can be extended through the integration of third-party tools such as Turnitin and Grademark. These tools enable automatic checking of assignment authenticity, in-text commenting, and structured feedback. They are particularly useful for evaluating written assignments, helping instructors speed up the grading process while maintaining the quality of feedback. Despite Moodle’s extensive functionality, many instructors also use external tools that offer additional features or are better suited to specific disciplines. One widely used tool is Google Forms, which, when combined with the Flubaroo add-on, allows for automatic quiz grading, response analysis, and personalized email feedback. When used with Quilgo, it is also possible to introduce time limits and exam proctoring. Gradescope, developed by Turnitin, is especially popular in STEM fields. It supports the upload of scanned student work, grading based on grading tables, and rapid, consistent evaluation of similar responses. The use of such tools significantly reduces administrative workload and ensures consistent application of grading criteria. For developing reflection and critical thinking, peer-assessment systems such as Peergrade and Eduflow are extremely valuable. These tools automate the distribution of student work, collect anonymous comments and scores, and apply predefined criteria. Research shows that this approach encourages deeper learning and increases student engagement. In the area of academic writing, tools such as OpenEssayist and AcaWriter automatically analyze written work and provide students with feedback on structure, key expressions, tone, and argumentation. These tools do not replace the instructor but serve as valuable resources for independent learning and practicing academic writing. For technical subjects, especially programming, tools such as Codio and Replit offer automated evaluation of student code, including functional testing and syntax analysis. These tools allow students to receive immediate feedback on errors and give instructors insight into learner progress and the frequency of attempts to solve tasks. In conclusion, automated assessment within Moodle provides a stable and integrated foundation for evaluation and formative support, while external tools offer additional functionality, flexibility, and adaptation to the specific needs of different disciplines. Optimal practice involves combining various approaches: Moodle quizzes and lessons as the core, supplemented by tools such as Gradescope for technical subjects, Peergrade for fostering metacognition, and AcaWriter for written work. Tool selection should not be driven solely by technical capabilities, but primarily by pedagogical objectives, alongside ongoing evaluation of their effectiveness and acceptance among students. Automated assessment does not replace the instructor; it enables them focus on what matters most: mentorship, support, and fostering deeper understanding among students.
