Welcome to the Introduction to Artificial Intelligence lesson. In the next few minutes, you will learn the fundamental concepts of artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science focused on developing systems and programs capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence. These tasks include learning, reasoning, speech and image recognition, language understanding, and decision-making. In simple terms, artificial intelligence enables machines to think, learn, and act in ways that resemble human behaviour.

Three key concepts underpin artificial intelligence: data, algorithms, and models. Artificial intelligence learn from data– such as images, text, or numerical records. Algorithms are sets of instructions or rules that guide a computer in processing this information. Models are the result of the learning process; they are systems that make conclusions or predictions based on learned patterns. Artificial intelligence systems are trained on data – the better the quality, diversity, and representativeness of the data, the more accurate and reliable the model.

Machine learning is a subset of artificial intelligence that focuses on developing algorithms that allow computers to learn and improve through experience rather than explicit programming. In other words, machine learning enables computers to learn from data without direct instructions. For example, a computer can learn to distinguish between human or robotic images by analyzing thousands of examples.

Deep learning is a field within machine learning that uses neural networks – systems inspired by the structure and function of the human brain. These networks consist of multiple layers, or “deep” structures, which allow them to recognize complex patterns in large datasets, such as in facial recognition, voice recognition, or automatic language translation.

How can artificial intelligence help save time or improve quality of life?

There are many practical examples of how artificial intelligence can help, from generating questions for students, creating summaries, grading student work, to improving teachers’ workflows.
