Activity description:
In this activity, you will participate in a debate – a structured discussion in which two different points of view are presented with supporting arguments. The goal is to encourage critical thinking about the role of data literacy in the development and application of artificial intelligence in education.
Debate topic:
"Data literacy is key to the successful development and application of artificial intelligence.”
Groups and roles:

The “FOR” group advocates the view that data literacy is the foundation for the responsible and effective application of artificial intelligence in education.

The “AGAINST” group argues that artificial intelligence can progress even without a high level of data literacy among users, provided the tools are well designed and supported by appropriate systems.
The debate is a group activity based on cooperation and joint preparation. Members of each group research sources together, agree on arguments and the order of presentation, and support each other during the discussion. In this way, you develop communication and collaboration skills, the ability to critically analyse information, as well as ethical argumentation – important teacher competencies in digital education.

Select a group
Select either the "FOR” or "AGAINST" group in the e-learning system (Loomen). -
Prepare arguments
Within your group, agree on key arguments, division of roles, and methods of cooperation.
Preparation takes place through joint work by group members using an agreed-upon tool and schedule.
- Conduct a debate
The debate takes place on a defined platform (for example, Kialo Edu), where your group presents its arguments and responds to the claims of the opposing side.
4. Conclusion
After the debate, the instructor creates a summary of the conclusions and shares it with all participants via notification.
Rules:
- Arguments must be clear, relevant, and supported by examples from practice or sources.
- Communication should be professional and academic.
- All group members should participate equally.
- In the final phase, you may respond to the arguments of the opposing group.

Note:
Points will be awarded based on the quality of participation, engagement, and adherence to agreed-upon rules during the activity.
Active participation (2 points total):
- 2 points: The participant participates regularly, asks questions, comments on others' arguments, and contributes to the development of the discussion.
- 1 point: The participant participates occasionally, presents at least one argument, but rarely joins further discussion or does not respond to others' presentations.
- 0 points: The participant does not join the discussion, or their contributions are not relevant to the topic.
Quality and relevance of arguments presented (2 points total):
- 2 points: Arguments are clear, logically presented, related to the topic, and supported by examples, literature, or practical experience.
- 1 point: Arguments are partially clear or relevant but lack examples, sources, or background.
- 0 points: Arguments are not clear, not related to the topic, or not supported.
Respect for debate rules and teamwork (1 point total):
- 1 point: The student respects debate rules, cooperates equally with group members, and demonstrates professional behaviour.
- 0 points: The student does not respect the rules, does not cooperate equally with the team, or disrupts teamwork.
