Welcome! In this video lesson, we will answer the question: What are the advantages and disadvantages, and what are the risks of applying digital technologies in education? Upon completion of this video lesson, participants will be able to: identify the key advantages of applying digital technologies in higher education; analyze potential disadvantages and risks associated with the use of digital technologies in teaching and learning; and explain how digital technologies affect the well-being of teachers and students. Digital technologies bring significant advantages. Flexibility in the time and place of learning makes it easier to balance education with other commitments. The availability of educational resources is greater, making learning possible for a wider range of people. Personalization allows materials to be adapted to individual needs. Interactivity with online tools encourages active participation. Also, technology facilitates collaboration and the sharing of educational content, while the digital environment fosters openness toward communication and interaction. Q: As the head of the e-Learning Center and an expert with years of experience in the application of digital technology, what advantages do you see in using digital technologies at the university? A: NINA BEGIČEVIĆ REĐEP, PhD, Full Professor: First and foremost, the application of digital technologies can lead to the improvement of learning and teaching, for example, through the application of innovative learning and teaching methods with the help of digital technology. Furthermore, a great advantage lies in the personalization of learning—adapting certain materials, learning styles, and teaching methods to the needs of students. Also, we can highlight the accessibility of education thanks to digital technologies, as well as a certain flexibility in learning and teaching that digital technologies bring. As the last major advantage, I would emphasize the possibility of collaboration, especially in international circles, through various collaborations that can certainly lead to high-quality results. And, of course, there is motivation. The application of digital technologies very often leads to greater motivation for all stakeholders involved. Alongside all the advantages, it is important to be aware of the potential disadvantages and risks of applying digital technologies. One of the most important risks is the digital divide—unequal access to technology and the development of digital skills for students and teachers. If equal conditions for accessing technology and digital skills are not ensured, social inequalities may deepen. Those with limited resources may feel marginalized and deprived of educational opportunities, which negatively affects their self-confidence and sense of belonging to the academic community. Thoughtless integration of digital technologies can encourage excessive use, leading to addiction. This can result in the neglect of other important aspects of life, such as sleep, physical activity, live social interactions, and off-screen learning, thereby impairing physical and mental health. Online platforms can become venues for cyberbullying, harassment, and other forms of negative online behavior. Students and teachers who are victims of exposure can experience significant stress, anxiety, depression, and a sense of insecurity within the academic community. Distractions in the digital environment can make concentration and deep understanding of the material more difficult. Superficial learning and a reduced capacity for critical thinking can lead to frustration and a sense of incompetence. Using various online tools and platforms carries the risk of violating privacy and the security of personal data. A sense of insecurity regarding one’s own data can cause anxiety and distrust in the online environment. Excessive reliance on online interactions, although offering flexibility, can reduce opportunities for real social contacts. Long-term isolation can negatively affect the well-being and mental health of students and teachers, as well as the sense of belonging to the academic community. It is important to realize that excessive use of digital technology can reduce face-to-face social interaction, which is essential for developing relationships, networking, and collaboration within the academic community. Digital transformation has a significant impact on the well-being of teachers and students. On one hand, it can facilitate work and learning, but on the other hand, it can lead to increased stress, the blurring of boundaries between private and professional life, and a sense of isolation. Therefore, it is important to promote a balance between digital and real interactions and to encourage care for one's own health, safety, and relationships in the digital environment. Q: How can the application of digital technologies affect the well-being of teachers and students? A: MIRNA GLAVINIĆ, Mag. Psych.: The application of digital technologies has a strong effect on the well-being of students, but also teachers. However, ubiquitous digitalization carries numerous challenges. Thus, excessive use of digital technology can lead to a negative impact on both the physical and mental health of students and teachers. Research shows that screen time can significantly predict increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in students. Also, excessive use of social networks, playing video games, and using other digital content can lead to addiction, as well as the reduction of social contacts in real life. Students often experience digital distractions, which can lead to impaired concentration and thus a decline in academic success. Teachers, on the other hand, increasingly experience emotional pressure due to constant availability, technical difficulties, and rapid technological changes. This leads to increased levels of stress, exhaustion, job dissatisfaction, and ultimately, professional burnout. Our counseling center actively promotes awareness of these risks and also offers systematic support for the mental health of both students and teachers through education, individual psychological assessments, treatments, and support groups. Digital technologies offer extraordinary opportunities for improving higher education but require a thoughtful and responsible approach. Think about ways you can balance the digital and the physical, protect your privacy and security, and promote respect and responsibility in the online environment. In conclusion, we have seen that digital technologies offer numerous advantages in education—from flexibility and personalization to facilitated collaboration and administrative support. However, at the same time, they can bring significant disadvantages and risks, such as the digital divide, addiction, cyberbullying, and the impairment of mental health. It is crucial to recognize that the well-being of teachers and students must be in focus. We must strive for a conscious and balanced application of technology, encourage critical thinking, and develop healthy digital habits. Only in this way can we harness the full potential of the digital age while preserving our mental health and well-being.
