Welcome! In this video lesson, we will explore how systematic data collection, goal monitoring, and strategy evaluation can improve the well-being of students and staff in our higher education institutions. Upon completion of this video lesson, participants will be able to: explain the importance of systematic data collection and goal monitoring for improving student and staff well-being; identify the challenges and opportunities of the digital environment in the context of evaluating well-being strategies in higher education; and propose methods for effective evaluation of well-being strategies with a focus on digital tools and the environment.

To systematically improve the digital well-being of teachers and students, it is crucial to establish a clear link between our goals, the specific activities we undertake, and the measurable indicators we use to track progress. Our goals represent desired states or outcomes related to digital well-being (e.g., reducing stress levels associated with digital tools, increasing the sense of connection in an online environment). To achieve these goals, we design and implement activities (e.g., workshops on time management and digital tools, technical support for platform use, mentoring programs). We measure the success of our activities in achieving these goals using indicators – specific, measurable markers that give us insight into the actual situation and the changes occurring.

This table shows examples of digital well-being goals, activities, and indicators. The table illustrates the connection between goals related to digital well-being at a higher education institution, specific activities undertaken to achieve those goals, and examples of indicators used to measure progress for both students and teachers. The first goal, reducing stress levels associated with digital learning or teaching, is supported by activities such as workshops on time management and digital tools, counseling on coping with stress in an online environment, and providing clear instructions and deadlines. For students, success indicators include average stress levels, the number of users of mental health resources, and satisfaction with the organization of online classes. Similarly, for teachers, average stress levels, the use of mental health resources, and work-life balance are monitored.

The second goal, for example, increasing the sense of connection in an online environment, is pursued through discussion forums, virtual groups, mentoring programs, and encouraging interaction during online classes. Indicators for students include a sense of belonging to the online community, frequency of participation in online activities, and involvement in mentoring. For teachers, the sense of connection with colleagues and students, frequency of interaction outside of class, and satisfaction with communication tools are monitored. The third goal is improving digital competencies for well-being, and activities include workshops on the safe use of technology, education on misinformation, and the promotion of privacy tools. Indicators for students are self-assessment of digital competencies for well-being, awareness of the risks and benefits of the digital environment, and participation in training. Similar indicators are tracked for teachers, with the addition of awareness regarding an inclusive digital environment.

The final goal, promoting healthy habits in the digital environment, is supported by campaigns on screen breaks and ergonomics. Indicators for both students and teachers include the level of awareness of recommended time limits, the frequency of taking breaks, and knowledge of ergonomic recommendations. In short, the table clearly shows how defined digital well-being goals translate into concrete actions, and then how specific indicators can be used to monitor the effectiveness of those actions for both key groups at the university – students and teachers.

To determine whether we have achieved the set indicators and thus our goals, various data collection methods can be used:
  • Surveys: regular anonymous surveys of students and teachers on different aspects of their digital well-being, including stress levels, sense of connection, satisfaction with the digital environment, and perceived level of digital competencies.
  • Resource usage analysis: monitoring the number of students and teachers using the provided support resources (e.g., counseling centers, technical support, workshops).
  • Engagement data: analysis of data on student participation in online activities (e.g., attendance, forum participation).
  • Focus groups and interviews: conducting focus groups and individual interviews with students and teachers to gain deeper insight into their experiences and perceptions.
  • Feedback analysis: collecting and analyzing feedback from conducted workshops and educational activities.
The success of digital well-being initiatives largely depends on the training and support of employees. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure:
  • Regular training and workshops: organizing interactive workshops and webinars for teachers and administrative staff on the importance of digital well-being, recognizing signs of digital overload in students and colleagues, and strategies for promoting healthy use of digital technologies.
  • Creation and distribution of information materials: creating easily accessible materials (guides, infographics, videos) on tools and techniques for managing digital stress, promoting healthy habits, and using available support resources.
  • Support network: ensuring the availability of professional services (e.g., psychological counseling, career counseling, IT support) that can provide individual and group support to students and teachers.
  • Mentoring programs: establishing mentoring programs where more experienced colleagues can provide support and advice to younger ones in navigating the digital environment.
  • Promoting a healthy work environment: creating a work environment that encourages open communication about challenges related to digital well-being and normalizes seeking help.
For the successful implementation of activities and the achievement of digital well-being goals, adequate resource allocation is essential:
  • Financial resources: ensuring a budget for the implementation of educational activities, engaging well-being experts, acquiring necessary tools and technologies, and promotional materials.
  • Human resources: hiring or training professional staff to lead workshops, provide counseling, and offer technical support; forming working groups or well-being committees to coordinate activities.
  • Time resources: recognizing and valuing the time that employees invest in activities related to promoting digital well-being (for example, participation in training, mentoring).
  • Spatial and technological resources: ensuring appropriate spaces for workshops and counseling, and ensuring the availability of necessary digital tools and platforms that support well-being (e.g., anonymous survey tools, online counseling platforms).
  • Communication resources: investing in effective communication channels so that information about well-being initiatives reaches all members of the academic community.
Through a systematic approach that includes defining clear goals, designing relevant activities, monitoring measurable indicators, active education and support, and adequate resource allocation, a higher education institution can significantly contribute to the digital well-being of its students and teachers, creating a healthier, more productive, and more pleasant academic environment.
