Self-Assessment of Open Digital Badges

This rubric is designed to help you assess the quality of your open digital badge concept. Each criterion is crucial for the effective recognition of skills and achievements within open learning systems.

1. Badge name (maximum 5 points)
   • 5 points: The name is clear, concise, creative, and directly reflects the recognized skill/achievement.
   • 3 points: The name is clear and relevant, but may lack creativity or a strong connection to the skill/achievement.
   • 1 point: The name is unclear, confusing, or does not adequately reflect the skill/achievement.
2. Recognized skill/achievement (maximum 10 points)
   • 10 points: The skill/achievement is defined with exceptional precision and clarity. The rationale for selecting this achievement is clearly explained, along with its relevance and applicability.
   • 6 points: The skill/achievement is defined, but the explanation could be more precise or more detailed.
   • 2 points: The skill/achievement is insufficiently defined or not relevant to the context of the badge.
3. Badge earning criteria (measurable indicators) (maximum 20 points)
   • 20 points: All criteria are exceptionally clear, specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). Each criterion is described in detail, leaving no ambiguity about what is required.
   • 12 points: Criteria are mostly clear and measurable, but some lack detail or are only partially SMART.
   • 4 points: Criteria are unclear, not measurable, or insufficiently developed, making them difficult to apply.
4. Tasks for demonstrating knowledge/skills (maximum 15 points)
   • 15 points: The proposed tasks (e.g., specific projects, portfolios, reports, tests, presentations) are completed, submitted, and directly linked to each criterion, diverse, and realistically achievable for learners. It is clearly described how each submitted task demonstrates the acquisition of the relevant knowledge/skills.
   • 9 points: Submitted tasks are mostly relevant but may not address all criteria or lack sufficient variety. Some tasks may be more difficult to achieve.
   • 3 points: The proposed tasks are irrelevant, unclear, or insufficient to demonstrate achievement of the badge.
5. Visual design and badge metadata (maximum 20 points)
   • 20 points: The visual design is creative and professional, clearly reflecting the theme and the associated skill/knowledge. All mandatory metadata (e.g., badge description, issuer, date of issue) is detailed and precisely developed, providing all necessary information.
   • 12 points: The visual design is acceptable but could be more creative or professional. Metadata is included but may lack detail or precision.
   • 4 points: The visual design is inadequate, and the metadata is incomplete or inaccurate, reducing the value of the badge.
6. Use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) and critical reflection (maximum 10 points)
   • 10 points: There is evidence of using GenAI tools (e.g., listed tools, initial prompts), and refinements are visible and critically considered. There is a clear explanation of what was refined and why, demonstrating a deep understanding of the subject matter.
   • 6 points: GenAI use is evident, but critical reflection and/or refinement are not sufficiently highlighted or are superficial.
   • 2 points: There is no clear evidence of GenAI use, or no meaningful critical reflection or refinement of the generated outputs.

Total Points: 80

Self-assessment grade ranges:

• 70-80 points: Excellent – Your badge concept is exceptionally well developed, innovative, and ready for potential implementation.
• 55-69 points: Very Good – The concept is well developed, with minor omissions that can easily be addressed.
• 40-54 points: Good – The concept is solid but requires significant revision in certain areas.
• Below 40 points: Significant Refinement Required – The concept requires substantial reassessment and revision.
