3. The role of support teams in AI implementation

Integrating AI into education requires a thoughtful, pedagogically informed, and ethically responsible approach. The teacher’s role in this process is not only technical but primarily strategic and educational – the teacher acts as a mediator between technology, students, and the institution, ensuring that AI enhances rather than undermines the quality of teaching and learning.

For the effective and sustainable application of AI, the following is recommended.

  1. Understand the capabilities and limitations of AI tools 
    Before incorporating AI tools into teaching, teachers should understand how each tool works, what data it uses, and its pedagogical benefits and risks. A critical understanding of technology is the foundation for responsible use.

  2. Align technology with learning goals and outcomes 
    AI tools should support clearly defined educational goals. Their use should contribute to achieving learning outcomes, not replace the pedagogical process.

  3. Adapt teaching and assessment methods 
    Teachers can use AI systems for personalised learning, automated assessment, simulations, content adaptation, and support for different learning styles. It is essential to maintain human oversight and pedagogical control over the processes that AI supports.

  4. Develop critical thinking and ethical awareness in students 
    Teachers should encourage students to reflect on the impact of AI on education and society, including issues of algorithmic bias, privacy, transparency, and academic integrity. This fosters the digital and ethical literacy needed for responsible participation in modern educational and professional environments.

  5. Maintain transparency and respect data privacy 
    Teachers must clearly inform students about how AI tools are used, what data is collected, and how it is used. All tools should comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the principles of the EU AI Act.

  6. Collaborate with support teams and institutional structures 
    Teachers should actively collaborate with pedagogical, technical, and legal support teams to ensure quality implementation, system security, and compliance with institutional digitalization policies. The teacher’s role in this context also includes providing feedback to the institution on the effectiveness and ethical challenges of applying AI.
  7. Continuously develop competencies in the field of AI 
    Teachers should regularly update their knowledge through training, workshops, and professional communities. Competencies should include technical understanding, pedagogical application, ethical principles, and reflective practice, in line with international frameworks such as DigCompEdu and the UNESCO Guidelines for Artificial Intelligence in Education (2021).
  8. Promote a culture of knowledge sharing and innovation 
    Artificial intelligence offers the opportunity to create a community of practice – teachers who share experiences, examples of good practice, and recommendations for improvement. This approach strengthens the institutional culture of innovation and shared learning.
