Cognitive load theory

Cognitive load theory is a cognitivist theory of learning that was introduced in the mid-1980s by the Australian psychologist John Sweller. A key premise of this theory is the attention paid to the human cognitive architecture: the characteristics and connections between long-term memory and working memory, and how the load on the cognitive system affects learning. Working memory is a critical part of that system as it allows new information to fit into long-term memory.
